What causes infertility?

Infertility is the inability of a woman to become pregnant after having sex for at least a year. Not being able to conceive a pregnancy can be the result of either dysfunction in the male partner or gynecological issues in the female partner. In about one-third of cases, there’s no identifiable reason for infertility.

How is infertility diagnosed?

The team offers on-site diagnostic tests to identify the causes of male infertility. In addition to reviewing your medical history and performing a physical exam, the urologists request samples of your semen for further evaluation of sperm count, quality, and movement (motility).

Ultrasound imaging is available to check the health of men’s testicles and locate varicoceles that may be blocking sperm from leaving the body.

Women may need a pelvic exam and ultrasound imaging to identify blockages in the ovaries and fallopian tubes that can contribute to infertility. You may also need blood testing to identify a hormone imbalance or underlying infections.

How is infertility treated?

Several treatments are available to restore your sexual function and improve your chances of conception. Treatments include:

Medications

The team at Northwest Arkansas Urology Associates may prescribe medications for women to help stimulate ovulation.

In men, medications can clear infections or help to maintain erections firm enough for sex. If testosterone levels are low, you may need hormone replacement therapy to replenish and rebalance hormone levels.

Surgery

For men, the team may recommend surgery to treat varicocele by repairing or removing enlarged veins in the scrotum. You may also need a surgical procedure to remove sperm directly from your testicles if you and your partner are using assisted reproductive technologies like in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

In women, the team can use the da Vinci® robotic surgical system to remove large fibroids or endometrial tissue growing outside of your uterus. The team can also use minimally invasive techniques to clear blockages in the fallopian tubes, so eggs can travel freely to sperm.
